How Venues Can Make Their Outdoor Spaces Winter-Ready (And Why It’s Worth It)

COVER YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE!

As someone who spends a lot of time designing structures and tweaking venues to perform better year-round, I’ve seen firsthand how much value sits untapped in outdoor spaces over winter. Too many venues simply “close off” patios, courtyards or terraces the moment the temperature drops — when with a few smart changes, those areas can stay warm, weatherproof, and genuinely useable.

Recently, for example, we installed a marquee over a venues brand new patio and added structural walls to several venues to block out the worst of the wind and rain. These upgrades instantly transformed underused outdoor areas into fully functional event spaces for the colder months. And this approach works at almost any venue!

Here’s what makes the biggest difference:

1. Cover First, Style Second

The biggest winter game-changer is physical cover. Whether it’s a marquee, stretch tent, canopy, or a custom-built roof section, getting shelter in place is the foundation of winter usability. Add a couple of solid or transparent walls to the wind-facing sides and suddenly the space feels like an extension of the venue, not an afterthought.

2. Reliable Heating = Happy Guests

Once a space is sheltered, heating becomes the next priority. Infrared heaters are consistent and quick, while gas heaters or fire features add warmth and atmosphere. Combine reliable heat with good airflow, and guests will happily stay outside even in January.

3. Lighting Makes Everything Feel Intentional

Soft, warm lighting does wonders for an outdoor winter space. Festoon lights, lanterns, and subtle uplighting make the area feel inviting rather than “temporary.” It also helps guide guests safely in the dark, which is half the battle in winter.

4. Flooring & Furnishings Bring the Comfort

Cold concrete and exposed decking don’t scream “cosy.” A simple elevated floor, carpet, or strategically placed outdoor rugs makes the space feel finished. Add blankets, textured cushions, and greenery, and the area quickly becomes somewhere people want to be, not somewhere they have to pass through.

5. Market It As a Feature, Not a Fix

If you’ve invested in weatherproofing — like we’ve done with covered patios and added walls — make sure people know about it. Update photos, promote winter packages, and show clients that your outdoor areas aren’t dormant in the colder months. They’re versatile, atmospheric, and ideal for receptions, drinks areas, and breakout zones.

Don't let your customers stand in the rain..         Much better!

Final Thoughts

Winter-proofing outdoor spaces isn’t about making do — it’s about unlocking value that already exists. With a bit of smart structure, a bit of warmth, and a bit of style, venues can turn their patios and terraces into year-round assets.
